Born in Montgomery, Ohio, and raised in Lansing, Michigan, trombonist and educator Joshua Nuss, began playing instruments at a very young age. He pursued a B.M. in Instrumental Music Education from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. During his time at Oakland, he studied trombone with Dr. Kenneth Kroesche and played in the award-winning Oakland University Brass Band. He also began honing his craft at student-centered teaching by establishing himself as a private and group lesson instructor. 

Joshua also began studying jazz music under the mentorship of Dr. Miles Brown, Sean Dobbins, and Scott Gwinnell, and frequenting Detroit venues including the Dirty Dog Cafe, Bert’s Marketplace, and Cliff Bells.

In 2016, Joshua graduated from Oakland and pursued his Masters Of Music in Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University under the direction of Professor Reginald Thomas. In addition to performing in many jazz ensembles and studying trombone with Tom Garling, He shared the stage with many acclaimed modern musicians including Victor Provost, Chamille Thurman, Fareed Haque, Tim Warfield, and Tanya Darby. Joshua also played a wide variety of Latin-influenced musics, and became a founding member of the salsa group, Salsa Del Norte. Salsa Del Norte continues to perform regularly in DeKalb, Illinois and the greater Chicagoland area. 

Joshua’s musical career continues as a performer and educator in the Chicagoland area. He will also be continuing to perform with Salsa Del Norte and record original music arranged by the band.
